Life Is But A Moment
Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. James 4:14 ESV
As I was reflecting on 2024, I was reading an article about all those we had lost during the year. There are some well-known names to me such as Toby Keith, Richard Sherman, O.J. Simpson, Dabney Coleman, Joe Lieberman, Richard Simmons, Willie Mays, Pete Rose, Bob Newhart, James Earl Jones, and many, many more.
All of these names are remembered for something. It may be their music, their acting, their skill on the field of play, their politics, or even their murder trial. But, as these names are in our hearts and minds at the end of this year. Next year, they will not be. They will pass through time as all men do. All that will be left will be what their impact and contributions are to the world. But they will cease, at some point, to be a daily thought.
And this is true for the thousands upon thousands of people who aren’t written about in articles this week about being lost in 2024. They are but a memory only to those who knew them personally. But they still leave something behind.
The question is what will we leave behind? We have but a moment in time to live on this earth. What are we doing with that moment? Are we wasting it away on things of the world? Are we sitting idle, letting the clock tick on? Or are we working for a greater purpose found in the Kingdom of God?
In 2025, let us purpose ourselves as the people of God to be people doing Kingdom work with a Kingdom focus. For me, one focus I am trying to have next year is that of being purposeful with “Gospel Conversations.” We have a story to tell. It is a story of hope. It is a story of victory. It is a story of great peace and comfort. It is the story of salvation.
We have but a moment to tell the world what Christ has done for us. We need to make the most of that moment.
When I leave this world, the only thing I want people to remember is Christ. I don’t know how I measure up to that desire at this moment. But it is not too late to make that a focus and passion. I want to be remembered as someone who was doing the work of Christ.
May we all rise up and live for this moment.
