Gender Affirming Care?
Yesterday, all eyes were on the Supreme Court of the United States as the Court heard oral arguments in United States v. Skrmetti. It is a pivotal moment in American Culture. The Court will effectively be deciding the trajectory of the transgender movement in the United States. The case specifically deals with the idea of “gender affirming care” in minors.
But I think we need to pause for a moment and think about terms that are being used from a Christian worldview. What does it mean to be caring? What does gender mean? What is right?
The word “care” can have multiple meanings and uses. It can mean to love, to have affection, to watch over, to heal or treat, to provide for, to handle delicately or with reverence. All of these fall under the umbrella of care. Gender, for the Christian, can only mean male or female. Genesis 1:27 clearly teaches God created male and female and nothing else. It is God’s decision, not a feeling or emotion. Gender, historically, has been tied to biological sex. Since the mid-1900s, culture has tried to shape the idea of a social construct found in “gender identity.” This is not reality. You can “identify” as anything but that doesn’t make it true.
So we have to look at the word care, and then apply it to gender, particularly those who are confused about their gender. A person is either male or female as we have already established. That is set by God. We cannot change that reality. So we must ask ourselves, is “gender affirming care” truly caring?
Does GAC show love? No, it is lying to the individual. Does it show medical treatment that is valid? No, it permanently alters their body even mutilation in some cases. Neither of these fit the definitions of care in any sense of the word. So, as Christians, we simply cannot be onboard with what the world calls “gender affirming care.”
The transgender movement is growing daily as people continue to reject God and truth. We must stand on truth and come with biblical clarity on what Scripture teaches. Scripture teaches we are created male or female. We do not get to choose. It is done at conception. God chooses, not man.
