A Response to Tony Hinchcliffe’s Trump Rally Performance
Last night, Donald Trump held a massive rally in NYC at Madison Square Gardens. Thousands were in attendance, national media coverage was everywhere. It was a chance for him to make another appeal to the American people 9 days before the General Election on November 5th.
Democrats and Liberals were already attacking the event as a Nazi, racist, event full of hate. Now, that characterization is ridiculous, misguided, and dishonest. However, there were real problems with the event last night and, as Christians, we cannot ignore those issues and just sweep them under the rug.
I will not go into the specifics of the so-called “jokes,” but comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe, performed a most crass and irresponsible act hours before former President Trump spoke. The jokes were borderline racist. They were very sexual. And they were wholly inappropriate.
Now, I do not know anything about Mr. Hinchcliffe other than what took place last night. But what I saw and heard was enough for me to hope that I never see another act from him ever again. The performance was absolutely vulgar.
What has troubled me is this, Christians are not speaking out against this and the Liberal Left is having a field day with it. All day, I have seen comments about “Christians, look what you are supporting! Shame on you!” What bothers me is not that this is what the Left has saying, although they are wrong. But what bothers me is that while we are correcting them that we do not support that, we also are not calling it out for what it is, sin.
The performance was sinful. It was completely worldly and, as Christians, we need to make sure we are being honest enough and full of enough integrity to make the point. Call what is evil, evil. Full stop.
The type of comments we heard from Tony Hinchcliffe have no place in the public square. And, as Christians, they have no place in our hearts and minds. If you thought the comments were funny, if you were not completely repulsed by them, it may be time for self-examination.
The Apostle Paul told us in Philippians 4:8 the types of things we are to think on.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8 ESV
Things that are pure, honorable, excellent, worthy of praise. Those are the things we should be fixing our minds upon. Not the filth that came out of a sinful comedian at a Trump Rally.
Christians, we need to be very careful that we do not forsake our Christianity in our zeal for certain political races, policies, and positions. Let us always remember we have a higher calling to a higher Kingdom and that should be our first responsibility.
No matter what political candidate we support, when they are wrong, when they go against God, we need to make sure we make clear that we do not support that and we believe it to be wrong. That is our duty. We cannot drop that responsibility.
